About Friend or Monster?

Practical guidance on tackling child sexual abuse

The campaign for International Missing Children’s Day highlights the disturbing reality, that 8 out of 10 sexually abused children are abused by someone they know and trust. Abuse within the circle of trust can cause children to run away, putting them at other or even greater risk. ‘Friend or Monster?’ aims to inform parents and caregivers about recognising the possible signs of child sexual abuse and how they can create a safe environment for children to express their concerns. The campaign offers information about contact points for help and information on reporting child sexual abuse in different countries. This makes it possible to recognise child sexual abuse, find help and intervene in abuse and prevent potential disappearances.
