AMBER Alert Europe is delighted to welcome Professor Barry O’Sullivan of University College Cork, Ireland, to its Scientific Advisory Board. Professor O’Sullivan is a leading European authority on artificial intelligence, data ethics, and responsible technology. Building on our work on the EU’s AI Act, Prof. O’Sullivan’s expertise will guide the organisation on the role AI and emerging technologies can play in missing children case investigations. 

Professor O’Sullivan is a full professor at the School of Computer Science & IT at University College Cork, founding director of the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics at UCC, and director of the Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in AI. He has played a leading role in shaping Europe’s approach to trustworthy artificial intelligence, notably as Vice Chair of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence.

He currently represents the European Union at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence and serves on the Irish Government’s AI Advisory Council. Professor O’Sullivan is a Fellow and past President of the European Artificial Intelligence Association, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, Professor O’Sullivan will advise on the opportunities and responsible use of AI in the context of missing children, ethical and regulatory considerations, and the further development of AMBER Alert Europe’s research capacity.

The Scientific Advisory Board brings together leading experts to support AMBER Alert Europe’s work across prevention, child protection, professional training, research, and policy, ensuring that innovation serves the best interests of missing and endangered children.
