In support of AMBER Alert Europe’s call for an improved Schengen Information System (SIS), the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament has voted to include preventive alerts for children at high risk of going missing.
The Schengen Information System (SIS), among others, enables police and border guards to enter and consult information on wanted or missing persons. Currently, children at risk of going missing are not entered in SIS. However, by including these children in SIS, with the so-called preventive alerts, law enforcement experts are now able to prevent some of these children from going missing.
“SIS can and should better protect children”, says Frank Hoen, Chairman of AMBER Alert Europe. “We are confident the European Parliament will approve the proposal from the Civil Liberties Committee and we trust an agreement will be reached with the EU Ministers.”
